Year of the Word of God
November 30, 2008 - November 28, 2009
During the Year of the Word of God, the people of God of the
Archdiocese of Santa Fe are encouraged to
- prepare to hear and live the Gospel as proclaimed in the
Sunday Eucharistic celebrations through personal prayer and
reflection on the scriptures prior to and after the Sunday
Eucharistic celebration.
- develop and deepen a love of and familiarity with the Word
of God through reading and bible study.
This year the world-wide Church is called to pay particular
attention to the Word of God. We are reminded that June 29,
2008 - June 29, 2009, has been proclaimed a "Year of St. Paul" in
preparation for the 2,000th anniversary of the apostle's birth.
Pope Benedict has convened the Synod of Bishops for October 2008, to
discuss the theme: "The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the
Church." (General Assembly of the Synod
Oct. 5-26, 2008)
In the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, the Pastoral Plan
(2006)
contains several goals for archdiocesan offices and for parishes
dealing with evangelization, preaching, formation and prayer, all of
which relate to the Word of God. Three key goals include:
- The whole people of God of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe will
support the use of the most effective strategies available to us
to communicate the Good News of Jesus Christ and promote the
ministerial efforts of the Church.
(Evangelization Goal 1: Sharing the Good News)
- The whole people of God of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe will
facilitate, encourage, and support the ongoing efforts of
priests and deacons to continually strengthen their preaching at
Mass and at other sacramental celebrations.
(Sacraments and Worship Goal 3: Preaching)
- The whole people of God in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe will
pursue training, tools and support to equip the faithful with
methods and models to deepen personal discipleship and share the
Good News with others. (Evangelization
Goal 3: Training for Evangelization and Discipleship)
Year of the Word of God
promulgated by
Archbishop Michael J. Sheehan,
Archbishop of Santa Fe
"Proclaiming and living God's Word belongs to all of us through
our Baptism. Each Sunday, as we gather to celebrate the
Eucharist, the whole People of God is called to hear the Word of
God proclaimed, to be nourished by that Word of God and by the
Body of Christ, and then we are sent to bring that Word to the
world.
Most Rev. Michael J. Sheehan
Archbishop of Santa FeWith this in mind,
I am proclaiming a YEAR OF THE WORD OF GOD to be observed in the
Archdiocese of Santa Fe from the First Sunday of Advent, 2008,
through the Solemnity of Christ the King, November 2009."...
